This procedure explains how to configure Product Recommendations within Salesforce Commerce Cloud (SFCC). Product Recommendations are used to push complementary products inside the cart and add-to-cart experience to encourage cross-selling and increase average basket value.

• Product Recommendations are SKU based, not Gen Code based.
• Always use the SKU / variation product reference when creating recommendations.
• Recommendations must be created product by product.
• Only “Cross-Sell” recommendations are supported in our setup.
• “Up-Sell” and “Other” recommendation types must not be used.
• The system remembers the previously selected source product when clicking “New.” Always verify the source SKU before proceeding.
• If a recommended SKU goes out of stock or is discontinued, it will no longer appear in the storefront recommendations.
• If the source product itself is discontinued or out of stock, you may need to rebuild the recommendation setup using the replacement SKU.
• When multiple products are added to the basket, the storefront may override manual recommendations and display bestseller recommendations instead.
• Separate default recommendations can also appear when the cart is empty.

Prerequisites

Before starting:

• Make sure you have all SKU references prepared in advance
• Verify which products should be recommended together
• Confirm the products are online and searchable

Procedure

1. Access Product Recommendations

Go to:

Merchant Tools → Products and Catalogs → Recommendations

You will land on the “Product Recommendations” section.

By default, the page may appear empty.

2. Check Existing Recommendations

To display all existing recommendations already configured in the catalog:

• Leave the Product ID field empty
• Click “Find”

This allows you to:

• Review existing recommendation setups
• Avoid duplicates
• Verify current product associations

3. Search for the Product You Want to Configure

Inside the “Product ID” field:

• Enter the SKU of the product you want to configure
• Click “Find”

Important:

• Always use the SKU reference
• Do not use the Gen Code

If the product has no recommendations yet, SFCC displays:

“There are no recommendations defined which match these criteria.”

Click “New” to start building recommendations.

4. STEP 1 – Select Recommendation Source

In Step 1:

• Enter the source SKU manually
• OR
• Click the “…” selector to search for the product

The source product is the product that will trigger recommendations in the cart.

Click “Next.”

5. STEP 2 – Select Recommendation Type

In Recommendation Type:

Select:

“1 (Cross-Sell)”

This is the only recommendation type used in our setup.

Do not use:

• Up-Sell
• Other

Click “Next.”

6. STEP 3 – Add Recommendation Targets

You are now configuring the products that will be recommended.

At the top of the page, you can see the source product currently being configured.

Use the search bar to:

• Search for the first recommendation SKU
• Select the product using the checkbox

Click “Finish.”

Your first recommendation is now added to the recommendation list.

7. Add Additional Recommendations

To add another recommendation for the same source product:

• Click “New”

The system automatically keeps the previously selected source product.

You are brought back to:

• Step 1 → Source Product
• Step 2 → Recommendation Type
• Step 3 → Recommendation Target

Proceed with the same process:

• Keep the same source SKU
• Select “Cross-Sell”
• Search for the next recommendation SKU
• Click “Finish”

Repeat this process until all recommendations for the product have been configured.

8. Change Recommendation Display Order

Once recommendations are added, you can control their display order.

Use the sorting arrows visible on the recommendation list to:

• Move products up
• Move products down

This affects the order in which recommendations appear in the storefront experience.

9. Configure Recommendations for Another Product

Once finished with the current source product:

• Click “New”

Warning:
The system still remembers the previous source SKU.

Before continuing:

• Replace the previous SKU with the new source product SKU
• Then repeat the same process again

Failure to change the source SKU may result in recommendations being added to the wrong product.
