This procedure explains how to create and configure promotions in Salesforce Commerce Cloud.

Promotions define the commercial benefit applied to a customer’s cart, such as product discounts, order discounts, or free shipping.

They must be correctly configured before being assigned to a campaign.

• Promotions without qualifiers may apply too broadly
  Misconfigured conditions can result in discounts being applied to unintended products or the entire cart
• SKU selection must be accurate
  Selecting the wrong SKUs will apply discounts to incorrect products
• Promotion class must match the objective
  Choosing Product vs Order vs Shipping incorrectly will break expected behavior
• Promotions are inactive without a campaign
  A promotion must be assigned to a campaign to be triggered
• Compatibility settings can cause conflicts
  Incorrect exclusivity settings may block or stack promotions unexpectedly
• Discount configuration errors directly impact pricing
  Any mistake will be visible to customers and affect revenue immediately

1. Access Promotions

Go to: Merchant Tools → Online Marketing → Promotions

Click New to create a new promotion.

2. Define Promotion ID and Name

• ID: Use a clear naming convention
• Name: Internal label
• Enabled: Set to YES

3. Configure Compatibility (Critical)

• Exclusivity: Set to No by default
• Class: Set to Global

Important: Promotions can run simultaneously within the same campaign or across multiple campaigns.

If multiple promotions share the same triggers (e.g. same qualifying products), they may all apply together and accumulate benefits.

To control this behavior:

• Use Exclusivity by Class to prevent promotions with similar triggers from stacking
• Use Combinable Promotions to define which promotions can be combined
• Use Mutually Exclusive Promotions to explicitly block combinations

👉 This is essential to avoid unintended discount accumulation in the cart.

4. Select Promotion Class

• Product Promotion: Discount on selected products
• Order Promotion: Discount on the cart
• Shipping Promotion: Discount on shipping

5. Define Promotion Rules

Select the condition that triggers the promotion.

6. Configure Qualifying Products (Critical)

When selecting qualifying products, pay attention to how conditions are combined:

• ADD → works as AND
• ADD Include → works as OR

Example:

• ADD (AND): Customer must have ALL selected products in the cart
• ADD Include (OR): Customer must have ANY ONE of the selected products

👉 This distinction is critical. Using ADD instead of ADD Include can unintentionally make a promotion impossible to trigger.

7. Configure Discount

• Select discount type: percentage or fixed amount
• Define discount value

8. Assign Discounted Products

Click Edit in the discounted product section:

• Qualifier: ID
• Operator: Equals
• Value: Select relevant SKUs

Click Save, then Apply.

9. Save the Promotion

Click Save to finalize the promotion.

The promotion is now ready to be assigned to a campaign.
